Eclipse SOA geht in offizielle Proposal-Phase
Die Eclipse SOA Initiative tritt nun in die offizielle 30 tägige Proposal-Phase ein. Die Charter ist hier einsehbar. Folgende Gründungsmitglieder haben ihre verbindliche Teilnahme zugesagt (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge):
- itemis (Steering Committee, vertreten durch Wolfgang Neuhaus)
- obeo (Steering Committee, vertreten durch Stephane Drapeau)
- Progress Software (vertreten durch Oisin Hurley)
- Software AG (vertreten durch Prasad Yendluri)
- SOPERA (Steering Committee, vertreten durch Ricco Deutscher)
Der offizielle Start wird nach der Proposal-Phase erfolgen und bis dahin sind noch einige Dinge zu tun, wie z.B:
- die detaillierten Anforderungen der ersten beiden Meilensteine festzulegen und
- das erste komplette Eclipse SOA Platform Packet bis zum offiziellen Start bereitstellen.
Es zeichnet sich aber jetzt schon ab, dass der Umfang des ersten Eclipse SOA Platform Paketes zunächst klein sein wird.
Die Stärke der Eclipse Foundation – die IP-Sicherheit – kann in der Entwicklung allerdings auch ein Hemmnis sein. So kann z.B. aus diesem Grund die BPEL-Engine Apache ODE noch nicht als Teil der Eclipse SOA Platform ausgeliefert werden. Aus diesem Grund wird SOPERA eine Member Distro bereitstellen, die die Funktionalität der Eclipse SOA Platform um das Process Orchestration Feature erweitert. Andererseits möchten die Mitglieder sicherstellen, dass die Funktionalität der Platform auf der Tooling – und Runtime-Seite – in gleicher Geschwindigkeit und mit wechselseitiger Unterstützung wächst. Zum Beispiel gibt es heute schon einen Eclipse SCA-Editor, aber Swordfish unterstützt SCA noch nicht, daher wird SCA erst später Bestandteil der Platform sein. Obeo wird vor diesem Hintergrund eine Member Distro auf Basis von Tuscany bereitstellen.
As far as I know Apache ODE 2.0-beta2 has been approved by the Eclipse’s IP team (http://markmail.org/message/cpn2zp544ufk6owl), so actually it should be possible to bundle it with your packages.
This is right, but this beta releases misses functionality required for Eclipse SOA. We therefore decided to use the previous version, but the previous version is not approved by the Eclipse IP team. So we wait until the gap in the next release is closed.
Thanks for the clarification. Could you elaborate on the missing functionality? I’m currently not aware of any. Anyway, we gratefully accept patches for ODE

when we evaluated ODE 2.0-beta2 we found that the JBI integration layer was missing some functionality that must have got lost during the major refactoring someone did on this part of ODE. We raised this issue on JIRA and Mathieu Riou was so kind to provide a patch that seems to solve the problem. However, as far as we know there’s no “next beta” in sight that includes this patch and that we could take and shove through the Eclipse IP machinery.
In general, we have some concerns about the frequency of releases in ODE. I remember someone (Guillaume Nodet?) saying that ODE 2.0 won’t happen before mid of 2010 which is still one year ahead.
If you feel that you could help us get things moving faster, that would be greatly appreciated! We’re willing to get more deeply involved, provide patches etc., but we need to get the feeling that our contributions are actually welcome and lead to something that we can use within an Eclipse project (preferably an official release).
